Brian is a practicing Compassion Focused Therapist and a Counselling Psychologist with 12 years’ experience working in adult mental health in Ireland and the UK. Over that time he has provided psychological therapy to a diverse range of people, with a wide variety of difficulties and needs. He has also been involved in training mental health professionals and supervising the therapeutic work of trainee psychologists.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is core to Brian’s work and he has completed the Advanced Clinical Skills course delivered by CFT founder, Professor Paul Gilbert, as well as other specialist CFT trainings. Brian is also trained in a range of other psychological approaches including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Brian grew up in Ireland but studied and worked in the USA and UK before returning to Dublin in 2018. Prior to joining the Irish Centre for CFT, he worked as a Counselling Psychologist in a HSE-funded community mental health service, and before that spent 10 years working in the UK as a Counselling Psychologist in the NHS.

Brian has a doctorate in Counselling Psychology from City University London and an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. His doctoral training included research into the factors that encourage men to seek psychological help, and research into the psychological impacts of cancer. He is registered as a Chartered Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland and the British Psychological Society.

Brian is a warm, approachable and respectful practitioner who tailors his approach to the needs of each client he works with. When embarking on psychological therapy with Brian, the initial focus is on understanding and making sense of the person’s individual difficulties and strengths, in light of their life experiences. This takes into account social and cultural factors, which have a significant impact on our lives. Ultimately, Brian’s aim is to help his clients to change their lives in positive ways and enable them to better manage the inevitable ups and downs of life.

Brian also offers supervision to psychologists and other mental health professionals. He has some availability for new supervisees. Please get in touch if you are interested in this.

Brian is not able to accept new clients for his waiting list at present. Please check back in July 2024 as we hope that this will change.
